Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the Uttarakhand state assembly on February 7, 2024, which was further passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly. The bill mentions uniform marriage, property, divorce, land, etc. for all citizens, irrespective of their religion.
With this presentation of the bills in the state assembly, Uttarakhand became the first state post-independence to pass the UCC bill and shall act as a torchbearer for other BJP ruling states. This bill will become the law of the state once it is cleared by the Uttarakhand Governor, Mr. Gurmit Singh. It is pertinent to mention here that the UCC Bill was a key promise of the state polls in 2022.Mr. Dhami said on this occasion, “This is a law to give equal rights to all. It’s a law that will promote unity, and it is not against any individual.”
The UCC bill suggests the implementation of a unified legal system that encompasses marriage, divorce, land ownership, property rights, and inheritance for all individuals residing in the state, regardless of their religious affiliations. However, it is important to note that this proposal does not extend to the Scheduled Tribes. This significant development transpired during the ongoing assembly’s exclusive four-day session, which commenced on Monday.
