The political scene of Bihar has seen fascinating movements and partnerships throughout the long term, with the vital participants being Nitish Kumar, the Janata Dal (Joined together) the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). These three substances have been key to the state’s political story, molding its course and mirroring the always changing elements of Indian and Bihar governmental issues. How about we dive into the many-sided trap of partnerships, clashes, and realignments that have portrayed the connection between Nitish Kumar, BJP, and RJD.
The JD(U)-BJP Alliance:
Nitish Kumar, a seasoned politician, has been a prominent figure in Bihar politics for several decades. The first significant shift occurred in 1996 when Nitish Kumar aligned with the BJP to form the Samata Party-led government in Bihar. This alliance continued, and in 2005, the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and the BJP formed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the state, with Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister.
Under Nitish Kumar’s leadership, Bihar witnessed a period of relative stability, economic growth, and improved governance. The JD(U)-BJP alliance was successful in winning subsequent elections in 2010 and 2015, consolidating their political dominance in the state.
The Breakup and the Grand Alliance:
However, in 2013, the political scenario took an unexpected turn when Nitish Kumar ended the alliance with the BJP over ideological differences, particularly on the issue of Narendra Modi’s candidacy for the Prime Minister’s post. This decision led to a brief period of political uncertainty in Bihar.
Nitish Kumar then formed an alliance with his erstwhile rival, the RJD, led by Lalu Prasad Yadav, and the Congress, to create the Mahagathbandhan or Grand Alliance. In the 2015 Bihar Assembly elections, this coalition proved successful, securing a decisive victory over the BJP-led NDA.
Return to NDA:
The political landscape continued to evolve, and in 2017, Nitish Kumar once again surprised political observers by breaking away from the Grand Alliance and rejoining the NDA. This move was driven by a combination of political calculations and the pursuit of a common developmental agenda with the BJP.
The JD(U)-BJP alliance was back in power, and Nitish Kumar resumed his role as the Chief Minister of Bihar. The political realignment showcased the fluid nature of alliances in Indian politics, where pragmatism often takes precedence over ideological considerations.
Return to Mahagathbandhan party
In August 2022, Kumar left NDA and re-joined the Mahagathbandhan Party citing JD(U)’s failure and involvement of BJP in Chirag Paswan ‘s(LJP) anti-Nitish campaigning in 2020 state elections.
